New Year’s Resolutions

It’s better late than never with New Year’s Resolutions!

Actually, I stopped doing New Year’s Resolutions on January 1 a few years ago. Since my birthday is three weeks into January, I would give myself from January 1 to January 20 to figure out if my resolutions were actually reasonable.

One year, I wanted to give up Starbucks and I found out a few days into the month, giving up Buckies cold turkey is really hard! So I decided that starting on my birthday, I would order a tall white chocolate mocha with nonfat milk and no whip only a couple times a week. That way, I still got my Buckies fix but it wasn’t nearly has bad as a grande white mocha!

So, I have finally come up with three New Year’s Resolutions for 2018!

*drumroll please!*

  1. Put my phone down
  2. Self-care
  3. Be more mindful

Starting with the first resolution – putting my phone down more often!

I spend so much time on my phone just scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. I always carry my phone around the house with me – even from one room to another. I check my phone first thing when I wake up and last thing before falling asleep.

I am working on checking my phone less often by deleting some of the apps on my phone – Facebook, a couple news apps, and a few others. I also turned off notifications for almost all of my apps as well!

When I wake up, I have been trying to turn my alarm off and then spend a few minutes thinking about the goals I want to accomplish throughout the day! I try to have a little pep talk and do a couple stretches before checking in on any over night notifications. As for before going to bed, I have started putting my phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode and then on the bottom shelf of my nightstand (a little harder to reach!) before reading my book.

The second resolution – better self-care habits!

I am making a more consistent routine of washing my face before bed and when I wake up. As well as using skin and hair masks on a regular basis, and moisturizing and taming my cuticles more often.

To get into the habit, I have three mirrors in my bathroom (all are necessary, I promise), and on the smaller one that I don’t use regularly, I have pink whiteboard marker and have written notes to myself! That way, I have a visual reminder in my face (literally) reminding me to take the time for self-care! I also have a new candle for my bathroom that smells SO nice to create a more relaxing, spa vibe.

As for my last resolution – be more mindful of what I eat and the cosmetics I use!

This is my biggest resolution, so hang tight!

Over the last few years, I have really focused on watching what I eat. I love a cupcake or Chick-Fil-A every once in a while, don’t get me wrong! However, I have been paying closer attention to when I feel full and not when I want to be done eating. I have been paying closer attention to the ingredient list on food and cosmetics – and if something sounds weird or made up, I google it! I have been paying closer attention to not wasting food when I eat out or cook.

Before going out to eat, I ~always~ look at the menu and choose at least two options that I might want. This way, I don’t get overwhelmed – especially if it’s somewhere I have never been, and order something random.

Portion sizes have gotten so massive over the years. I usually order appetizers as my meal when I go out to eat because I can always order a side (or dessert) to fill me up if the appetizer doesn’t!

In terms of cosmetics, I have been learning a lot about the different ingredients, how cosmetics are made, and the laws around cosmetic making and distribution. It’s almost overwhelming how much actually goes into making make-up! Overall, I am trying to find brands that do not test on animals and have clean ingredients, all while being reasonably priced!

The last way I am trying to be more mindful this year is in the waste I produce! My mom and I refreshed our stash of reusable grocery bags, including buying vegetable bags. Ultimately, I am trying to reduce the amount of plastic and electricity I use! It’s been tough but in the long run, it is definitely a win for everyone!

In the end, I have three resolutions that will challenge me and really help me to live a fuller life! I am excited to see how this year goes, and will definitely write a post to update you all on how I am doing and what I have learned.
